Education

A four-year course in Electrotechnology is the standard level of education that most electricians begin with. While learning, they also participate in paid and unpaid apprenticeships and traineeships. Aspiring electricians also need to meet various numeracy and literacy requirements, and must have good eyesight.

Registering & licensing

In order to conduct electrical work in Victoria, all electricians must be licensed and registered. An electrician’s license is normally valid for up to five years, and there are a number of criteria that need to be matched.

To apply to be licensed, an application form must be lodged with evidence of apprenticeship completion, evidence of experience, and more.

A license in valid for five years and it is each contractor’s responsibility to ensure their licences are renewed on time.

Apprenticeships

Education is only one component (albeit an important one!) of the electrical contractor’s journey. During their education, electricians will also begin apprenticeships. There is a lot of competition for apprenticeships. These vary in length but normally last between three and four years. Through their apprenticeships, electricians put their learned skills into practise.
